Targeted youth support groups
We believe that everyone can benefit from learning in the natural environment. This is especially true for young people whose learning style may not suit conventional classroom learning.
We have worked with a wide variety of targeted youth support groups, using outdoor learning as a way to re-engage young people, at risk of being excluded from school or becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), in the process of positive personal development.
The simple fact is that not everybody learns in the same way, which means that for some young people the mainstream classroom isn't the optimum environment for learning and personal development, leaving them despondent, unmotivated and low in self-esteem.
At SOLD, we work with a variety of targeted young people at risk of being excluded from school or becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
The benefits of practical outdoor learning
Practical learning in the outdoors is not perceived to be academic in the way that conventional classroom learning is perceived. Instead, outdoor learning is active, challenging, fun and exhilarating. Through these outdoor experiences, we encourage young people to feel a renewed sense of engagement in the learning process, while they also naturally develop personal skills, which they may not feel comfortable exploring at school.
Furthermore, engagement in and enjoyment of outdoor learning has been shown to correlate with an increase in motivation and improved engagement in other areas of life, such as school, work and family.
Defining the aim of your group's visit is very important. As their leader we work with you to specify their learning outcomes you wish them to achieve during their visit. These could include:
- setting goals
- broaden horizons
- self awareness
A residential stay offers a whole new dimension to a young person's outdoor experience.
Sometimes, a residential trip is the first time many young people have stayed away from home. Otherwise, it's a great opportunity to feel independent and enjoy time with their friends, creating lasting memories.
Benefits of a residential
Residentials have been shown to promote various benefits for young people in terms of personal development, such as:
- a greater sense of independence
- personal confidence
- improved interpersonal skills
- a greater sense of personal responsibility and time-keeping
- personal care and hygiene
And what could be more fun than living in the outdoors and spending quality time with your friends?
