The Nature area at Thames Young Mariners

Whilst the country has been closed due to the Covid-19 virus our nature area has continued to flourish. The contrast of the area to the rest of the TYM site is clear the moment that you approach it and walk through the winding path. Tall trees, wild flowers and dense foliage thrive as the signs of Spring and new life are already apparent.

Birds are returning due to the daylight starting to lengthen. Signs of badger activity such as their footprints and the holes that they have dug for worms are visible. The bat boxes are being visited, probably by Pipistrelle bats, primarily due to their ideal location close to the lake which attracts this bat's favourite insects, whilst also providing a safe home.

At our bug hotel, which adds to the biodiversity of the area, a gentle nudge of the wood reveals many insects including centipedes, beetles, spiders and other creatures using it as a place to feed and multiply. We have just cleaned our notice boards which contain interesting information on the wildlife, for when our new visitors arrive after Lockdown.

Although the pandemic has stopped us having a normal life the nature area has carried on growing and is becoming even more established and beautiful.
