Positive behaviour

Positive behaviour

At Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development we believe that adults play an important role in modelling appropriate behaviour and respect to others. We have high expectations of all visiting adults and SOLD staff.

They must lead by example and support children and young people to behave in a way that promotes welfare and development. SOLD staff will actively encourage and promote positive behaviour through everything they do with individuals and visiting groups.

All SOLD staff are made aware of this policy during their induction and are offered appropriate training for their role regarding children and young people's development and expectations.

They are expected to adhere to this policy when in loco parentis and have a consistent approach in the use of techniques to promote positive behaviour and in intervention techniques.

Visiting organisations would have their own policy and actions managing behaviours. On occasions when SOLD staff need to deal with certain behaviours, they should refer their concern to the visiting staff organiser or leader.

Promoting positive behaviour

  • Due to the nature of the activities our staff regularly use praise and reinforcement of achievements that children have made.
  • Positive and desirable behaviours are acknowledged and praised.
  • Children and young people are encouraged to work as a team and to share and negotiate to achieve a shared goal.
  • Depending on the age of the group children and young people are involved in the setting of boundaries and rules to help the assess risk and work together.
  • Children and young people are informed of the consequences of their behaviour both positive and negative.
  • We do not humiliate, segregate, withhold food or use the 'naughty chair' in managing children's behaviour as this is detrimental to their self-esteem.
  • Staff do not use any form of physical intervention unless trained and is absolutely necessary to prevent personal injury to the child, other children, an adult or serious damage to property. This is only deemed acceptable as an absolute last resort.

During each group briefing throughout the activity session, Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development (SOLD) staff create and uphold an agreement between them and our participants to foster positive behaviour during each outdoor learning session.
