Curriculum Days

outdoor learning surrey curriculum linked

One of the benefits of having us come to your school on an outreach day is that we can often tailor the day's activities even more finely than we might be able to at our centres

Having our portable equipment and working to your school schedule means your classes could easily combine classroom and outdoor learning in the course of a day.

Being on the school site might also help to keep your pupils in the frame of mind for academic studies through our exciting outdoor experiences. And having us at your site could even provide inspiration and ideas towards your own school-led outdoor learning.

Take a look below to see the kind of curriculum linked activity sessions we can offer.

History experience at schools with children learning

History

Using resilience building and skill focused activities can be a brilliant way to appreciate the challenges of living in the past, from learning ancient army drills to Palaeolithic hunting techniques. We have activity plans and props from previous schools' requests for History themed days (but we are always open to new suggestions).

Have a look below for our 'ready to go' history days:

The Stone Age

Activity days themed around Stone Age life. An immersive experience for Key Stage 2 as pupils explore the skills and knowledge needed to survive as a hunter gatherer.

Activities include:

Fire Lighting - Participants explore all the methods of Stone Age: fire lighting, from flint and strikers to bow drills.

Can the group light a fire using only natural resources?

Hunting (Archery) – The group will recreate a hunter's toolkit using natural resources and try their hand at archery using modern bows and arrows.

Food and shelter – Participants will learn how to forage for food and use tracking skills (no foraged food will be eaten). The group will need to make a shelter to keep them warm and dry.

Archery with children

Invasions of Britain themed days

Activity days themed around the historic invasions of Britain, providing an immersive experience for primary schools.

We have props and activities ready to go for the following periods (but let us know if you have something else in mind):

  • Romans
  • Vikings
  • Normans

Romans

Archery and catapult shooting - An important part of Roman campaigns. Pupils try tactical clout archery and attempt to build a catapult.

Roman soldier challenges - Troops of ten are put through their paces with Roman soldier formation, races, gladiator training and Roman themed team challenges.

Traditional fire lighting and cooking - Pupils attempt to get sparks from flint and iron strikers then make a fire and cook flatbread. Participants will take part in an interactive exploration of Roman foods.

Normans

Archery and catapult shooting – An equally important part of Norman campaigns. Pupils try tactical clout archery and attempt to build a catapult.

Arts, history and culture - Participants create miniature Norman Motte and Baileys with natural materials. The pupils will also be tasked with creating a weaved collage from scavenged objects inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and create a large scale 1066 timeline.

Traditional fire lighting and cooking Pupils attempt to get sparks from flint and iron strikers then make a fire and cook flatbread. Participants will take part in an interactive exploration of Norman foods.

Vikings

A Raider's Adventure orienteering - Participants navigate an interactive orienteering course themed on the real adventures of Viking raiders. The route they choose could see them making a fortune or meeting a sticky end!

Build a burial ship - Participants use SOLD props and natural resources to build a Viking burial ship then explore the customs and ceremonies surrounding Viking funerals.

Traditional fire lighting and runestone making - Pupils attempt to get sparks from flint and iron strikers then make a fire. Participants make their own runestones and dry them on the heat of the fire.

Maths

We can use specially selected team challenges, natural art, and archery as a tool for exploring a range of maths topics, from numeracy to geometry. We can adapt our activities to suit Early Years, KS1 and 2.

Make a whole day of it with your pupils or combine it with the subjects below.

Science

Explore your school's flora and fauna with a scientific purpose, create a fire for experiments or discover the laws of the physical world through specially selected team challenges.

Geography

Our orienteering and navigation activities are a perfect way to understand maps in a really engaging way. Taking part in subject specific team challenges and creating natural displays can also provide an exciting way to explore other aspects of Geography.

English

Much like the examples above, we can use our team challenges, orienteering and woodland activities to develop language skills through specially adapted tasks. Activities like climbing, archery and bushcraft can also lend themselves to an adventure story theme (think Kensuke's Kingdom or Robinson Crusoe). Outdoor activities can be a fantastic way to awaken the senses and ignite creativity.
