EXPECT Programme - Summer 24

This programme is fully funded from Surrey County Council with no cost to parents or carers.

Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development (SOLD) and STIP (Specialist Teachers for Inclusive Practice), with the support of Surrey County Council are pleased to introduce the Aspire EXPECT Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Programme for Summer 2024.

Together STIP and SOLD have co-produced the EXPECT Programme to work alongside the ASPIRE Transition Programme to ensure that identified pupils can experience an inclusive outdoor experience with their parent or carer.

This programme aims to support pupils and their parents or carers with a successful move from primary to secondary school during the summer break.

What to EXPECT

EXPECT is a two-day programme for pupil, parent or carer based at of one of our three SOLD outdoor learning centres:

  • High Ashurst in Dorking
  • Henley Fort in Guildford
  • Thames Young Mariners near Richmond

Inclusive programme

The programme will be fun, exciting, engaging with the aim to build the confidence of all participants.

SOLD will use a mixture of engaging and inclusive outdoor learning activities to help develop skills needed for this successful and positive transition.

There is an understanding that these young people may face additional challenges to learning and attending this programme.

It will be very inclusive, and activities will be adapted on the day to best suit the requirements and any additional needs of the group to achieve positive success.

EXPECT stands for

EXPLORE - Explore outdoor activities together

POSITIVE - Promoting positive parenting, participation and behaviours needed to enable a successful transition to secondary school

ENGAGE - Engaging with new shared challenges and experiences

CONNECTIONS - Building new positive connections with peers and other parents and carers facing similar challenges

TRANSITIONS - Strengthen understanding and gain strategies as a parent and carer to support the transition to secondary school

SOLD instructors will support pupils, and parents or carers

  • Over the two days you will be with a SOLD instructor to support you through this programme.
  • Each programme will be in small group, so you will be able to share skills, knowledge, experiences and support with others.
    • Group size: biggest group is 12 (including pupils, parents or carers).

Arrival and end time

  • Arrival: 9.45am for a 10am start
  • Finish: 4.15pm

Lunch

A hot lunch is provided on the day for the pupils, parents or carers.

Hot drinks and water will be provided (bring a water bottle if you have one).

Booking Information

This programme is for a targeted pupil and their parent or carer.

Group size: biggest group is 12 (including pupils, parents or carers).

  • Choose the preferred centre
  • Parent(s)/ carer(s) will need to attend with the pupil.
  • Families must be able to attend both day 1 and day 2. We are unable to mix dates with other programmes.

We can offer a train station pick up from one of three local stations to the centre.

  • Dorking Main Station for High Ashurst
  • Guildford for Henley Fort
  • Kingston for Thames Young Mariners

During the booking process choose the option 'Request collection' (pick up from the station). We will get in touch to arrange it.

Biggest group is 12.

For instance the group could be: 4 pupils and 2 parents or carers per child.

We'll customise the activities to suit your group and make sure everyone has a great time!

The activities might include:

  • high ropes course
  • archery
  • climbing
  • low rope course
  • orienteering
  • bushcraft (fire lighting, cooking over the fire)

Water activities - only available at Thames Young Mariners

  • kayaking
  • canoeing
  • raft building
  • stand up paddleboard

Activities are dependent on the centre.

  • Waterproofs, for rainy and windy days to prevent getting wet or during activities where the children might get splashed
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather: jumper, trousers, long sleeved t-shirt
  • Sun cream and sun hat
  • Warm coat
  • Hat and gloves (in case it gets really cold)
  • Trainers

Water activities (only available at Thames Young Mariners)

  • Old pair of trainers that can get wet during water activities or water shoes (flip-flops, crocs or open back or toe shoes are not suitable)
  • Shorts or swimming costume and towel
  • A change of clothes including underwear and socks

Unfortunately, this programme requires attendance on both days.

We understand that families may have siblings that they will have responsibility for during the summer, which could be a blocker to accessing this programme.
